☂ First Impressions
↪ VISUAL: Character appearance! General features, specific scars, tattoos, other things. Comments about any changes that may happen over the course of their time in the game/psl. Describe details, and if you want, you can even link some examples for everyone!
↪ FASHION: Generally monochromatic and otherwise washed out palette. Baggy clothes that are about a size too big for her petite frame. A lot of sweaters and oversized jackets, sleeves often hanging past her wrists and obscuring her hands. When performing, she opts for a traditional black suit pants and jacket and white button down.
↪ DEMEANOUR: How does your character hold themselves? What kind of feel do they give off? Give a general sense of their attitude.
↪ SOUND: Muted. Speaks very quietly with a reserved and level tone.
↪ SCENT: Resin and wood polish, cheap detergent/shampoo.
↪ MENTAL INFORMATION: Any information on psychic shields or other things that telepaths might want to know.
↪ MAGICAL INFORMATION: Any basic information that magical people might sense when they encounter your character.

↪ BACKTAGGING: Absolutely. I'm pretty slow on my good days but as long as you're still willing to slog it back then I'll do the same.
↪ FOURTHWALLING: No, thank you. If it's an intra-universe interaction, then feel free to recognize the Umbrella Academy and Vanya's lack thereof or the book detailing such but. I mean it's not really mainstream enough to be an in-character issue.
↪ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: I'm fine writing it but due to Vanya's background and upbringing, she is unused to and even uncomfortable with various forms of physical affection unless it is coming from one or two specific people. She will likely stiffen and lock up when presented with physical affection, and may shove away or bodily retreat if it's from someone she doesn't know.
↪ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Again, I'm fine writing it but note that Vanya's abilities may manifest and do so especially under stress. These abilities are of a level to cause world-extinction-level events so your character attacks at their own risk.
↪ RELATIONSHIPS: By and large, I am not looking to ship. While the Hargreeves are not biologically related I feel any such ships would land close enough to incest to still qualify, and anything with Leonard/Harold is right fucking out for obvious reasons. I'm more than happy to dig into some proto-crush that may have been happening with Five during Academy days, or develop cross-canon CR and if some chemistry happens there, great! But do not get your hopes up.


☂ Permissions
↪ CANON WARNING: This canon is primarily based on portraying and dealing with the long-term effects of child abuse — emotional neglect, ostracism, manipulation, gaslighting, and some clinical experimentation — and (lack of) coping methods thereof. It also has some mentions of body horror and drug addiction thanks to Vanya's siblings. Her character arc in season one involves psychotropic medication as a form of control, a manipulative/abusive "romantic" relationship, betrayal trauma, claustrophobia, and eventual noise induced hearing loss. If you are uncomfortable dealing with these topics, please say something as at least one or more inevitably will come up and I don't want anybody getting uncomfortable.

  • When Vanya published her autobiography, it produced a minor schism in the die-hard Umbrella Academy fandom. Not whether the book was well-written or not, not whether it was right for the secrets to be revealed (though those were naturally also debated) — but whether the account is actually real or not. A great number of people scoffed and pointed to the total lack of evidence of a seventh member of the Academy as their evidence, and the general theory there is that this alleged "Vanya" decided to write a self-insert fiction.

  • When the Academy was still training for their debut mission, Vanya was an active participant. Obviously not for field presence as she (apparently) didn't have any powers — but by standing in as Sir Reginald's research assistant. She carried clipboards, took notes, and filled several notebooks detailing the results and standings of her siblings. All this was done with the thought of being part of the team regardless of her lack of powers, of being one of the guys in the chair to help coordinate and call shots from behind the scenes. Obviously this didn't pan out. Her siblings mocked her ("your handwriting's good, still not a power"; "ooh, these are in cursive, how impressive!") and when the Academy came out for the bank job, Sir Reginald announced he had adopted six children. Said announcement made it very clear that no matter how much effort she put into being part of the team, she most certainly wasn't.
